The Morality of New War
Mon 30 April, Tues 1, Wed 2, Thur 3 May 2012
7pm in Salisbury Cathedral
With the rise of asymmetric warfare, does the traditional understanding of Just War theory work in the 21st century? Does human rights legislation have a place on the battlefield? And has secularisation undermined the moral substructure of the British army? These issues and more will be addressed during the course of the series.
Giles Fraser lectures on ethics and leadership at the Defence Academy at Shrivenham. He is the former canon chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral, London.
With lectures on four consecutive evenings, why not come for the week and enjoy being just steps away from Salisbury Cathedral?
While you’re here, you can enjoy Sarum’s delicious meals, specialist library and bookshop. Contact Alison Ogden for programme and accommodation details.
Price £24 series of four; £7 per lecture
Fraser will give the first lecture on Monday 30 April and the fourth on Thursday 3 May.
The two middle evenings will be in discussion format. On Tuesday 1 May, Fraser will be in discussion with Richard Norton-Taylor, long-standing writer on security and defence for the Guardian. On Wednesday 2 May, he will be in discussion with the Revd Nicholas Mercer, Assistant Curate in Gillingham and Milton-on-Stour in Dorset and the government’s former chief legal adviser for Iraq.
Richard Norton-Taylor won the Freedom of Information Campaign Award for journalism in 1986. He edits the Guardian Defence and Security blog with Nick Hopkins.
Nicholas Mercer was named Human Rights Lawyer of the Year by Liberty, a civil liberties and human rights charity.
