Your training for ordination or lay ministry will be on either a part-time or full-time basis.
We work on an academic year that runs from a residential Summer School for ordinands in the week before the August Bank Holiday (other candidates are invited in for the Sunday of that week), and goes through to mid to late July. Final year students finish at the beginning of June.
The work is paced through the year, and a fortnight’s break is given both at Christmas and Easter in addition to the summer break. If there are emergencies such as sickness, staff are fully supportive in enabling the student to manage the situation and the work.
If you Train Part-Time
If you train part-time, you will need to give approximately 16 hours a week to your study, to attend 6 residential weekends a year and the annual residential week in August. In the first year particularly you will have two extra Saturdays to attend, for induction and for safe-guarding training.
The 16 hours is an average that includes formational work, including involvement in church on Sundays and during the week. You will take four modules a year, in which we ask you to meet twice a module with your Training Supervisor, and you will need to give an hour and a half to an online tutorial or your Local Learning Group on most of those weeks. Each module contains 10 to 12 hours guided study material available online.
This is a big commitment, especially for those in full time jobs. But it is manageable and worthwhile! You will need to drop other commitments, including in church, at the start of the course to make space for the work required, but you can take these on again gradually as you gain a rhythm of study.
If you Train Full-Time ‘Context Based’
If you train full-time, Church of England Ministry Division asks that you work an average of 40 hours per week for 45 weeks of the year. Included in this, you work one day a week (voluntary) in your parish as ministry experience, in addition to your involvement there on Sundays. You attend 8 residential weekends a year and the annual residential week in August. In the first year particularly you will have two extra Saturdays to attend, for induction and for safe-guarding training.
You take six modules a year, some of which run concurrently and require you to be able to organise your time effectively. We ask you to meet once a month with their Training Supervisor, and you will give an hour and a half to an online tutorial or your Local Learning Group on most weeks of a module.
