Wisdom for Mission from the Church Fathers
- Course Dates: Tue 29 January 2019, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

In this day, we will be distilling some of the teaching from the Church Fathers on Mission.
We will especially be drawing from the Cappadocian Fathers of the 4th Century: Basil of Caesarea, Gregory Nazianzen and Gregory Nyssen. During the day, as well as sketching the background to their lives and works, we will cover three main areas:
Considered Orthodoxy: Gregory Nazianzen. Gregory both defended and proclaimed the central message of Christianity: the Incarnation of the Divine Logos for the redemption of humankind.
Compassionate Action: Basil of Caesarea. Orthodoxy was crucially linked to Orthopraxy, making the message and the mission of the church so compelling and remembered in the locality even today. We shall consider Basil’s teaching on Social Justice and note the link to asceticism and prayer.
Contemplative Being: Gregory Nyssen. We shall see how prayer, contemplation and self-denial lay at the heart of the mission and work of the Church Fathers.
