Public Lecture with Professor David Tracy – ‘Theology, Spirituality, Art: Michelangelo as Exemplar’
- Course Dates: Sun 13 May 2018, 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm
Theology, Spirituality, Art: Michelangelo as Exemplar
Sunday 13 May 2018, 5pm to 6.30pm
David Tracy is perhaps the most eminent Roman Catholic, as well as North American, theologian of his generation. He comes to Sarum College to deliver a rare UK lecture.
Students of theology may know his Blessed Rage for Order (1975) and The Analogical Imagination (1980), as well as his attractive and enduringly timely essay on the character of intellectual conversation, Plurality and Ambiguity (1986).
Tracy’s writings of the last twenty-five years have “turned” with increasing intensity towards the fire of invoking and thinking God in our day. How can people today pray and think God – honestly, lovingly, and even powerfully – without betraying God’s silence or distracting attention from human suffering?
Around the time of his Gifford Lectures in 2000, Tracy was speaking and writing about ‘fragments’ as being the characteristic theological and spiritual forms of our time. In more recent years, he has also focused on the role of intuition of the Infinite for Christian theology and spirituality.
The theological world awaits Professor Tracy’s long-promised ‘book on God’. In the meantime, Sarum College is very honoured to host a rare UK opportunity for seeing and hearing one of the foremost Christian thinkers of our day.
There is an associated day conference, Iterations: Spirituality in post-Christian Times, on Monday 14 May.
A poster publicising both the lecture and subsequent conference can be downloaded here.
