The First Cathedral at Salisbury: Ritual, Music & Architecture in the 12th Century
- Course Dates: Mon 15 May 2017, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

This lecture with John Harper reappraises the archaeological and written evidence of the first cathedral at Salisbury – now known as Old Sarum.
The last major archaeological investigation of Old Sarum cathedral was interrupted by the first World War, and never completed.
In recent years, new liturgical sources have come to light, and there has been an opportunity to re-examine neglected sources.
Taken together, these enable us to take forward our understanding of the first cathedral, and how it was used by the expanding community of canons and their vicars in the 12th century.
John Harper (pictured) has spent the last eight years researching the experience of late medieval worship, especially in Salisbury Cathedral. He is emeritus director, the Royal School of Church Music, emeritus professor of music, Bangor University, and honorary professor at Birmingham University. He also leads the Sacred Music Studies research group.
