Teach Us How to Pray: Poetry and Prayer

  • Course Dates: Thu 19 November 2020, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

This day will explore the role of poets as instructors in the art of prayer, not just as a set of words, but as an effective experience, a form of meditation and a wordless, bodily practice.

The day will involve close reading, reflection and discussion on poems that engage with traditions of public and liturgical prayer, of private and extemporary prayer, and of secular forms of prayer. By the end of the day, you will have encountered new literature and read familiar works in a new way, providing food for ongoing spiritual, ministerial and missional practice.

Part of the poetry and spiritual practice series, these study days are aimed at a general audience, but bring together practitioners in the arts, ministry and spiritual disciplines to explore the interplay between the two realms of poetry and spiritual practice. These days focus not just on the uses of poetry for private devotion, prayer and reflection, but also its public-facing role. They give participants the opportunity to learn more about key poetic figures, and to explore the role of poetry in their own life and work.

This day may be of particular interest to those reflecting on how they use poetry as part of the life of prayer, those involved in spiritual accompaniment, and as a preparation for Advent.
