Robbins Lecture: Can the Church of England Learn from the British Army?
- Course Dates: Thu 15 February 2018, 6:15 pm to 8:00 pm

Please note that this lecture is now fully booked.
Stephen Robbins asks whether the Church can learn from the recent pastoral experience of army chaplains.
This lecture marks the centenary of the end of the Battle of Passchendaele, and the publication by Anglican army chaplains of the controversial manifesto for post-war church reform, The Church in the Furnace. It was first given in November 2017 at the University of Durham’s Michael Ramsey Centre for Anglican Studies.
The speaker, the Venerable Stephen Robbins CB, is Honorary Canon of Salisbury Cathedral and a former Chaplain-General of the British Army.
Brigadier Allan Mallinson, journalist, military historian and author of military fiction, will introduce the lecture.
Future lectures will be given by Vann Fellows. The Vann Fellowship is a three-year postdoctoral role dedicated to the study of the relationship between Christianity and the armed forces – in the past, in the present, and into the future.
Drinks and canapés will be served from 6.15pm with the lecture beginning at 7pm.
The College’s new display of the war medals of Padre William Addison, including a replica of his Victoria Cross, will be unveiled prior to the lecture, at 6.30pm.
