Reading Scripture Together: The Four Marys

  • Course Dates: Sat 5 September, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

This conversational one-day course series will re-read selected sacred texts in detail and consider the ways they have been interpreted, both in the written word and in art, and on their relevance and meaning to us today.

The voices of women are thin on the ground in the Gospel texts. Four of the most significant female presences within these texts are, coincidentally, all named Mary; Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Mary the sister of Martha, and Mary the wife of Clopas who is often thought of as Jesus’ aunt. These women offer a unique voice within the Gospel narratives—even Mary the wife of Clopas who does not speak in the Gospel accounts. Looking at the presence of these women at the foot of the cross, at the tomb of Jesus, and at the resurrection of Lazarus, this study day will explore the stories of these women and the relationships that are revealed both between the women, and with God.
