Queerness as a New Model for Vocation and Ministry

  • Course Dates: Wed 27 November 2019, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

We regret that this day has been postponed due to circumstances beyond our control.  We are working to rearrange a date.

This day explores the nature of Queer Virtue, which puts queer experience at the heart of faith.

Queer people bring extraordinary gifts to faith communities, but queer people are not unique in this. All of us bring gifts rooted in our identities and experience. ‘Queerness’ is a modus operandi that can help all of us bring our experience to bear together, to strengthen our faith and our communities.
Liz Edman will explore the nature of Queer Virtue, which puts queer experience at the heart of faith. Using Queer Virtue as a case study, we will listen to the reality of our own experience. And, honouring that reality, think about how we might recast and live out our faith with authenticity. What might vocation look like? How might we see ministry in new and different ways?
We will explore together:
● What identities are central to each of us?
● What have those identities taught us about how we should live together, and about God?
● How can we ‘queer’ false binaries that pit us against each other?
● How do our identities help us to dig more deeply into scripture together?
● How can a robust dialogue with scripture — and with one another — help us better understand who God calls us to be in community?

And in the light of these explorations, what do our stories add up to? What new meanings can we make? How can this revitalise the Christian community, in our personal contexts, and more widely? What new and authentic sources of authority emerge? What has been overlooked, pushed to the edges, missed out, silenced? How can we reclaim scripture and tradition for ourselves, enrich our understanding of what we are each called to; what our ministry looks like?
