Preaching, Poetry and Prophetic Speech

  • Course Dates: Wed 1 July, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

This day explores how poetic processes and forms are integral to the practice of preaching.

It examines the prophetic possibilities of poetic preaching, drawing on the idea of poetry as a practice of human speech to God that can also echo the voice of the Lord. We will read some classic spiritual poems together, as well as some recent examples of poetic-prophetic speech events, including spoken word poetry. We will explore in practical ways how to apply these ideas to public speech about God, particularly through preaching.
