Money: A Language to Understand and a Debt to Redeem
- Course Dates: Sat 19 May 2018, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Money, so familiar and so essential in our lives, and so mysterious, turns out to be one of our principal languages.
Just like words on a page, the coins, notes and figures on our bank statements are symbols of meaning, relationship and value. But what does money really signify?
Does it actually rest on a mountain of debt – and how precarious is that mountain in the light of recent ‘financial crises’? How do we negotiate the system we call money? Can it be enabled to fulfil a godly purpose for the common good, or is it just too risky to think about, let alone criticise? How should we handle our money – and is there anything we can do about our fragile money economy to redeem it?
This day aims to help us to understand money’s workings more deeply and then reflect on its place in our lives. It will include lectures and opportunities for interaction with the lecturers and other participants. When you leave you will still not be able to do without money – but you will have thought more clearly about what to be doing with it.
