- Course Dates: Sat 19 January 2019, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

This day will introduce participants to various approaches to the suffering that seems to fill both the human and the non-human worlds.
We shall have an opportunity to look at some of the recent debates about ‘natural evil’ in particular. We shall then move on to consider the concept of divine glory, which is so important in the Christian Scriptures. In a sense every event can be looked at through three lenses: that of the creation, its laws and processes, that of the Cross, and God’s giving of the Son to be lifted up for the life of the world, and that of the Resurrection and final glorification of creation. To explore this we shall look at some of the hardest cases in which to discern God’s glory.
The day is based on a new book, Theology in a Suffering World: Glory and Longing (Cambridge University Press, 2018), which in turn is based on Christopher Southgate’s Sarum Lectures in 2014.
