Francis and the Sultan

This conference will explore the meeting in 1219 during the Fifth Crusade of St Francis of Assisi and Sultan Malik al-Kamil, as inspiration for Christian-Muslim dialogue today.

The event is offered in partnership with the Third Order of the Society of St Francis (TSSF).

Andrew Todd is an expert in contemporary religion and spirituality; an Anglican priest and Franciscan Tertiary. Guest speakers
Mary and Stephen Ashton Mary and Stephen run the Llansôr Mill Trust, a 25-acre oasis half way between Bristol and Cardiff. Their Muslim-Christian group seeks to follow in the footsteps of the encounter between St Francis and Sultan Malak al-Kamil 800 years ago. Saleem Asghar Kidwai OBE Founder and Chief Executive of SNK Associates and former Chief Executive of the Ethnic Business Support Programme, an initiative run on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government to encourage and support members from the ethnic community in business ventures. He is also co- founder and Chairman of Islamic Banking and Finance Centre UK. Léonie Northcote Area Minister to the Severn Group of the Third Order and a Spiritual Director. In 2012 Léonie was selected to create an inter faith walk for the Mayor’s Pre-Olympic Celebrations. Richard Sudworth Richard is Secretary for Interreligious Relations to the Archbishop of Canterbury and a part time lecturer at the Queen's Foundation, Birmingham. He was a CMS mission partner in North Africa and Birmingham before becoming an Anglican priest. He is the author of Encountering Islam: Christian-Muslim Relations in the Public Square; Distinctly Welcoming: Christian Presence in a Multifaith Society. Andrew Todd Andrew is a senior lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University and the Cambridge Theological Federation where he teaches Practical Theology and the Sociology of Religion. He worked previously at Sarum College in Salisbury, where he was coordinator of the Centre for Contemporary Spirituality. Andrew has been a Franciscan tertiary for over thirty years and coordinates the Third Order, SSF, planning group for marking 800th anniversary of the meeting between St Francis and the Sultan of Egypt. Riyaz Timol Riyaz works as a Research Associate at Cardiff University’s Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, where he had completed a PhD as part of the Jameel Scholarship Programme. His research interests include ethnographic methodology, intergenerational transmission of Islam in Britain and the relationship of Islam with modernity. His disciplinary approach is within the sociology of religion with particular reference to the theoretical contributions of Peter L. Berger. In his current work, he seeks to map the way contemporary accounts of Islamic revival intersect with secularisation theory in Europe.
