Evelyn Underhill and Mysticism
- Course Dates: Sat 28 January 2017, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) was a prolific writer, lecturer and broadcaster on Christian Spirituality.
In particular, she is known for her writing on mysticism and prayer. Amongst her achievements was the writing of her book ‘Mysticism’ and becoming the first woman to be a Fellow of King’s College, London. This day will explore both her understanding of mysticism, in particular, in relation to the work of the philosopher Henri Bergson, and how mysticism is relevant to the life of all Christians. Later in life she undertook the ministry of Spiritual Direction and led Retreats. She took her own journey with God very seriously and, amongst, her own spiritual directors were Baron Von Hugel and Reginald Somerset Ward.
She has left a rich legacy of insight into the Christian experience of Mysticism and, a wide understanding, of the religious experience of Mysticism in other faiths. Underhill is still valued today for her scholarly achievements and her practical guidance for all those who hunger for a more intimate experience of God.
