Cancer: A Pilgrim Companion
- Course Dates: Sat 7 July 2018, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Statistically, 1 in 2 people will develop cancer at some point in their lives.
Aside from the physical suffering that cancer causes, the disease may also lead to psychological, spiritual and social distress, not only for the ill but for those who surround and support them. In part, this is related to taboo that still haunts the disease, and the fear which it provokes. To understand the experience of the ill, this course will explore the history, science and taboo of the illness.
We will consider the disease as taking the ill on an unwanted journey that has the potential to evolve into a pilgrimage drawing those who tread its path nearer to God. The use of storytelling will be explored, and participants given the opportunity to engage with many sources of wisdom in creating healthy attitudes to cancer. We will explore how practical theological reflection can give insights into the experience, and ask how the resurrection is Good News to those with the disease and those in remission.
Crucially, this course will resource and engage anyone touched by the illness, either personally, or through a friend and family, and those engaged in pastoral ministry or seeking to create healthy and welcoming churches which promote human flourishing.
