Biblical Study Break: The World of Jesus – Archaeology, Geography and Texts
- Course Dates: Mon 20 May 2019, 1:00 pm to Thu 23 May 2019, 2:00 pm

This Biblical Study Break is an immersion into the world of Jesus through archaeology, geography and New Testament texts.
It will begin by exploring the Temple Mount in Jerusalem (the temples of Solomon and Herod) and the significance of the temple in ancient Judaism. It will then look at related texts and the importance of the temple for understanding Jesus in the New Testament.
Other locations such as Bethlehem, Bethsaida, Nazareth and Caesarea Philippi will then be explored with a view to considering what can be learnt from them about Jesus and his world. Relevant New Testament texts will be studied and major themes brought out. There will be an exploration of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and its importance in helping to understand Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection.
Particular items such as the Pontius Pilate stone from Caesarea Maritima and the Caiaphas ossuary in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem will help fill out the picture, showing how archaeology and geography can help you appreciate some of the New Testament texts more fully. Our aim is to have a greater sense of the importance of Jesus in his world and of his significance today.
