Biblical Study Break: Sacrifice and Salvation: The Epistle to the Hebrews

  • Course Dates: Mon 10 February 2020, 1:00 pm to Thu 13 February 2020, 2:00 pm

The biblical concept of sacrifice is an essential component in understanding the significance of Jesus’s death and resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews.

Sacrifice is no longer part of our world: we find the whole idea alien and repulsive. And yet the sacrifice is fundamental to the human imagination, especially to the relationship between earth and heaven, between humanity and the divine. Sacrifice is one of the basic concepts adopted by the early Christians to understand the significance of Jesus’ death and it is threaded through all our worship, hymns, liturgies, and prayers — especially as we approach Good Friday and Easter. Without it, we lose an essential component of the Christian gospel of salvation.
This Biblical Study Break will offer participants the opportunity to look again at the concept of sacrifice in the Bible, and especially in the Epistle to the Hebrews. How does it help us to understand the staggering historical fact that lies at the heart of the Christian faith: the cross of Christ? And how might it enrich our understanding of the person of Christ and the work of salvation?
