Awkward Reverence: Exploring the Poetry of Philip Larkin
- Course Dates: Sat 16 February 2019, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Philip Larkin became one of Britain’s most popular post-War poets on the strength of just over 100 pages of poetry.
His reputation as a grumpy, right-wing curmudgeon has sometimes distracted people from a more careful reading of the poems. These often have a lucidity of language coupled with an alarming honesty about the feelings and illusions of a 20th century life. How might a person of faith approach Larkin’s work? Is there a helpful conversation to be had between his poems and Christian belief? These are the questions that will lie at the centre of this introductory course.
