TQQ: The Gospel of Matthew: Christian Judaism or Christianity? (1 of 2)

  • Course Dates: Tue 31 October 2017, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Matthew’s Gospel, to which we owe the Sermon on the Mount, is peppered with paradoxes.

At one and the same time it is extremely Jewish in atmosphere and also fiercely critical of some members of the Jewish community. It advocates a religion that some would see as Christian Judaism and others as Christianity, and the two are not the same. It belongs firmly within the Christian world but has no sympathy with Christians who do not toe the line in respect of the Law of Moses. It maintains fervently what Jesus had said about the coming of God’s kingdom but recognizes that the passage of time requires some adaptations to faith. It is the only Gospel to mention the word ‘Church’, but it does so in a highly partisan way which offers scope for a fascinating exercise in theological detection. In particular, how happy was Matthew with Paul, and how happy would Paul have been with Matthew?

Advance booking not required, simply come along on the evening. For further information about Theology Quest and Questions, visit our TQQ page or contact Alison Ogden on aogden@sarum.ac.uk or 01722 424826.
