2015 Niblett Memorial Lecture: Troubling Context: Christian Witness in Canada

  • Course Dates: Sat 10 October 2015, 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm

This lecture explores two challenges for Christian witness in Canada.

First, Canadian contexts make faith formation challenging. The history of the churches with First Nations, the experience of pluralism and secularity are three particular realities that trouble Christian identity. Second, some scholars are challenging the whole idea of context as fate. And so the question of what Christian witness brings to the Canadian context will also be addressed.

The lecture will be followed by questions and a discussion between the speaker, Richard Topping, and Peter Selby, formerly bishop of Worcester and Bishop to HM Prisons, and visiting professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King’s College.

Richard Topping is principal of Vancouver School of Theology. He has published in the areas of theological hermeneutics (Revelation, Scripture and Church, Ashgate), homiletics, philosophy of religion, systematic theology and the theologies of John Calvin and Karl Barth. He is working on a book which examines the role of imagination in postmodern Christian theology.

The lecture is free, optional supper at 7pm is £15 per person.
Both must be booked in advance.
