Advent for Everyone: A Journey Through Luke by Tom Wright
Advent is such an overlooked and under used time in the cycle of the Christian calendar. Christmas seems often to come earlier and our preparations, understandably, are dominated by travel plans, food, reconnecting with old friends with our circular letters and office parties. Why not resolve to spend a little bit of time each of the days of the four weeks of Advent with this excellent short journey through Luke?
Tom Wright takes four themes: encouragement, renewal, justice and celebration for each of the weeks of Advent. He begins with the Sunday reading from the revised common lectionary and offers key passages together with prompts for further reflection. There is clarity, faithful attention to the words of Scripture as collated by Luke, undergirded by the conviction that these words are indeed for our life and wholeness. Even for this reader there were significant new insights and illuminating challenges. As the days of Advent unfold, hearts and minds are turned to the glory wonder and sheer joy of Christmas through these Bible studies.
This is a gem of a book. It is small enough to slip into your pocket and I promise will be life giving and transforming your Christmas preparation as together we take advent seriously enabled and empowered by Luke’s gospel.
