An introduction to an understanding of aesthetics as a subject, in general, and to theological aesthetics in particular.
Develop skills to explore different ways of interpreting art. The focus of this knowledge will be explained through key texts on theological aesthetics. Understanding a theological approach will include discussion of other theories and means of interpretation. Theological aesthetics are illustrated through the central theological doctrines: the incarnation, the cross the resurrection and the Trinity.
Students will read and discuss relevant writings by contemporary and past theologians relating to themes in theological aesthetics, such as imagination, beauty, divine revelation, truth and meaning and art as locus theologicus.
Those not on the MA programme are very welcome to book on this course as an auditor.
