A series of five Lenten lectures

This course is designed to experience the richness of the tradition of devotional verse which is a constant feature of English Literature from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Mondays in March 2012 – 5th/ 12th/ 19th/ 26th and April 2nd 7-9pm

The five lectures will include writing by the following:
1400 – 1600: Geoffrey Chaucer, John Skelton and Thomas Wyatt
1600 – 1700: John Donne, George Herbert, Henry Vaughan and John Milton
1700 – 1800: Samuel Johnson, Thomas Gray and Christopher Smart
1800 – 1900: Gerard Manley Hopkins, Christina Rossetti and Alfred, Lord Tennyson
1900 – present day: Kathleen Raine, R.S. Thomas and Rowan Williams

The course will allow participants to submit poems of their choice for inclusion if they wish and also to share in the reading of poems aloud.

Copies of the poems to be studied will be made available in advance to participants.
