Mysticism in the Modern World

doorway from monastery in Prague

This short course will introduce students to ways in which mysticism and contemporary society interact.

The aim of the course is to explore different ways in which the mystical is engaged by contemporary spirituality, both in terms of practice and at a more conceptual level.

So for example, the course will examine how mystical writings are being used within radical forms of church and why it is that secular cinema finds ancient mystical writers an inspirational topic. Is there something liminal about mysticism which makes it an appropriate vehicle through which to explore the boundaries of faith and humanity that makes it particularly exciting for the 21st century? And if so, what?

The course will focus particularly on Christian mysticism, but aims to approach the topic from a broad enough perspective that it will also resonate with students who are more familiar with other traditions of mystical writing.
