This module examines a selection of novels and poetry from the seventeenth century to the present day to explore their links between literature and spirituality.
Particular attention is paid to the rehearsal of classical myth and the biblical theme of pilgrimage in modern English literature. Students engage in close textual analysis and are encouraged to give their own critical readings and to develop their own understanding of the relationship between the literary imagination and the spiritual quest.
Authors include George Eliot, George McDonald, C.S. Lewis, Mary Shelley, W.B.Yeats, Wallace Stevens and Edwin Muir
